Cinema Studies in the News

John Mcamis’s THE VAN plays at film festivals this summer

Welcome back to school for another great year for the Cinema Studies Program.  If we asked rising senior John McAmis what he did during his summer vacation, he could say that he enjoyed having his animated documentary film, The Van, play on the short program of the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films. It’s a prestigious festival: since its inception in 1990, over 100 of the films screened at the festival have gone on to win Academy Award nominations for one of the short films categories.

The film had already played at film festivals in Nashville and Toronto, and this summer it also played at  festival in Savannah, Georgia.  John made the film as part of a documentary production course taught by Paul Harrill in the fall of 2015.  And if you’re interested in seeing it here in Knoxville, it will be playing (along with some other films made by UT Cinema Studies students) at the Knoxville Film Festival in the “Made in Tennessee” film block on Saturday, August 27 from 12-2 p.m.

One of our goals in the Cinema Studies program is to help students learn to make a clearly focused short film that tells a meaningful story or develops a clear concept, and John’s film is a great example of that goal coming to fruition.  If you get a chance, come out and see that and other films made by UT students on August 27 at the Knoxville Film Festival!
