James M. Johnston, filmmaker and winner of an Indie Spirit Award for Producing, visited Knoxville and UT to screen a number of his films and talk with our video production students about how he has become an active and award-winning independent filmmaker.

Johnston visited two classes—one on Narrative Film and one on the Business of Movies—and shared his valuable perspective with student.

He also attended a screening of a film he directed—Melville—and a feature film he produced, Listen Up, Philip (starring Jason Schwartzman and Elisabeth Moss) at the Public Cinema series at the Knoxville Museum of Art.  A Fort Worth, Texas, native, Johnston talked about his commitment to making regionally rooted cinema but also of the necessity to network and make connections with filmmakers around the country and the globe.
